The Beamish family planted a three acre orchard in 1990. What started as a hobby farm quickly had us operating as a U-pick and selling at the Charlottetown Farmers market. In 2013 we established Deep Roots Distillery to produce and sell liqueurs and spirits including our signature product Apple Brandy. We have been making and enjoying hard apple cider for personal use for many years.
In 2018 Greg and Ashley invested in a breeding pair of Kunekune pigs. A breed native to New Zealand, Kunekunes have historically been used on farms to help with pasture cleanup. As they do not root, they can be placed in an orchard at the end of harvest and they will eat the windfall around the orchard to help with pest control for subsequent years.
Well, the first litter of cute little pigs arrived in June 2020. As can sometimes happen with a first litter, mommy pig became agitated and we feared she could unintentionally cause harm to her newborns. The breeder in Alberta left us with the suggestion to feed momma some hard apple cider to calm her down. We happened to have a few bottles left in our personal supply so we fed this to her. This immediately calmed her down and helped her settle into motherhood quite well. So, when Greg was looking to name his cider, Little Pig just seemed appropriate!
